on vancouver…
(9/1) months of worry has finally been laid to rest as this morning my visa for working in canada has been approved - i have recently made the decision to accompany my partner in vancouver as she completes her doctoral program, leaving the majority of my friends, family, and safety net behind in oregon - this decision has come with an entire gambit of logistical, practical, and professional questions and stresses for the both of us but little by little, everything has been falling into place, albeit with set backs and inconveniences to work through - ……
(9/8) i left this draft open so that i could return to it when i had a moment - that moment took an entire week because even though things were falling into place logistically, practically many things were falling apart at the seams - the house we rented, seeing as we were out of country when we settled on it, turned out to be a mess of mismanagement and neglect - the grime and dirt that had collected was staggering enough for us to have to hire a cleaning service, something i could never normally do on my own - many of the utilities including the stove, sinks, windows, heater, laundry machines, and bathroom amenities ALL came with it’s own host of problems - the frustration that began, basically right after i started this post had been practically unrelenting - but again slowly but surely everything has settled and it seems like we have things squared away, and we are not responsible for any of the charges - the only thing that was really wasted was time and mental capacity - now we can all focus on our more pressing issues and start to build here in vancouver
some of what i noticed immediately was the very real change in attitude between americans and canadians - as the united states continues to battle it’s polarized fight of masks vs no masks, pro-poke vs anti-vax, canada seems to be slowly reopening arts venues and performance spaces - i was able to catch a brief glimpse of that light, in the small havana theatre wherein a small flamenco collective of local talents and legends played a show - i could tell by the crowd’s reaction, and the overheard conversation, that this hasn’t been the new normal yet, live performance was still uneasy, but that it is welcomed and sorely missed by people all over vancouver - i’m excited to be a part of this grand reopening, and i will start throwing my lot in with the other artists starving for work - it’s another patch of turbulence, but as always, if i stay the course i have confidence i’ll soar right through, eventually
