on rain - composition

i’ve been searching for a specific word that i can’t seem to find, and maybe i combined two definitions and thought it made a specific word - the definition was something regarding the distinct feeling of nostalgia that is imposed upon someone during a rain - i related to that word so vividly when i first came across it and recently i’ve started to feel that same sense - i grew up in the willamette valley, oregon, and rain is more than a weather condition, it’s an ever present part of your life and view of the world

rain in the willamette valley is a constant, as it is in much of the pacific northwest - much of my childhood and the memories i have of it has the backdrop of a rainy day - gray skies, dark soil and asphalt, and droplets of water soak every house, car, and person in sight - i’ve often said that owning an umbrella is a source of shame for an oregonian, we much prefer our flannel and patagonia brand windbreakers to keep us dry - i have a specific memory of staying inside on the weekend, i must have been between 7-9 years old, just enjoying a video game probably, and i remember looking outside and seeing this monochrome landscape outside of my house - this image, mundane and ordinary, has been seared into my brain for no practical reason whatsoever but it has remained a part of my and become a sense of melancholy and calm for all of the years that have followed

i bought a painting recently by farrell douglas entitled downtown downpour that captures this sort of imagery for me - i want to keep that image and those feelings as the main atmosphere of a piece i’m composing - i have some ideas set in stone and others need to be fleshed out a little bit further - i want to share some of them but not before they are realized, perhaps soon
